When the victim was killed, police at the scene fired shots.
The attacker killed a woman working for the French police near Paris, before killing her by nearby police.
The attack on Friday took place inside police station in Rambouillet, a town 57km (35 miles) southwest of the French capital.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and Prime Minister Jean Castex visited the town, following this.
“A police officer was stabbed with a knife at Rambouillet police station, where I am going,” Darmanin said.
It was not immediately clear who he was and what his intentions were.
A lawyer in Versailles was investigating and a French terrorist judge who had not been charged with terrorism had not been summoned, “said one official, according to Reuters news agency.
The incident follows the brutal killing of four people at the Paris police headquarters in 2019, and comes six months after a teenager beheaded a teacher at the same administrative school in France.
