Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, issued a statement Monday honoring the life and legacy of Prince Philip, who died last week, I remember him as a public servant and as a grandparent.
“My grandfather’s centennial is defined by work – his homeland and the Commonwealth, for his wife and Queen, and for our family,” William said in a statement from Kensington Palace.
“I feel fortunate that I have not only had his example to guide me, but his eternal presence in my adult life – in good times and in the most difficult days,” William said.
A photo that William shared shows his grandmother riding in the car with William’s first son, Prince George, third in the throne.
Prince Philip, Governor of Edinburgh, he died Friday is 99. His funeral will take place on Saturday in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
William’s brother, Prince Harry, has returned from the US to do the job, but his middle wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has been advised by doctors not to travel.
In his remarks, Prince William said he was grateful that his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, had been around for years to get to know his grandmother.
“I will never underestimate the special memories my children will have of their grandparents coming to pick them up in their car and seeing for themselves how inspiring and humorous they are,” added William.
“My grandfather was an amazing person and he was an amazing generation,” he said. “Catherine and I will continue to do what they want and we will support the Queen in the years to come. I will miss my Grandmother, but I know she would want us to continue the work.”
