French Vice President Eric Zemmour has launched his presidential campaign in front of thousands of supporters at a Paris ceremony that was marred by controversy as he spoke.
Zemmour, a 63-year-old writer and television commentator, announced Tuesday that he would run in the April election next day, and will join those who want to challenge President Emmanuel Macron.
He made his debut at a parade ground in Paris where thousands of people cheered for all the talk about reducing immigration and shouting at Macron.
“His achievements are many: if I win it will be the beginning of a return to the most beautiful country in the world,” Zemmour told the group.

Fighting broke out and chairs were thrown at protesters as they stood with “No to Racism” on their t-shirts, and at least two of them were seen bleeding when they were released from the hall.
Staff from the popular but most disturbing Quotidien night TV show were also criticized and stripped of security, with hostility by journalists part of the speech at the event.
The meeting was seen as an opportunity for Zemmour to re-vote after elections showed he was falling out last month in an attempt to cast doubt on his motives.
Zemmour, who has two counts of hate speech, said there were 15,000 people at the meeting, though the organizers mentioned about 12,000.
Research shows that voters currently believe that Marine Le Pen, a former leader of the right-wing National Rally, could produce a smarter president than Zemmour.
Recent polls suggest he will be removed from the polls if a new election is held, Macron is expected to win ahead of Le Pen, but experts have warned that the outcome is unknown.
The crowd at the meeting – of all ages, but with more men than women – responded enthusiastically to Zemmour’s remarks on immigration, race and Islam.
He promised to reduce the number of immigrants to zero if elected, to strengthen the system, and to expel undocumented immigrants and immigrants.
Zemmour also emphasized the danger of French citizens being “replaced” by refugees, repeating the so-called “great replacement” theory popular with whites.
The Republican Party in France has nominated Paris Valerie Pecresse as its nominee on Saturday following a grand rally on immigration and crime.

In Paris, about 2,000 people staged a protest rally against the protesters, calling them “racists and separatists.”
“It is important to show that we will not allow this party to exist,” Simon Duteil, a spokesman for Solidaires, told AFP.
As well as a series of recent mistakes, including what happened to the middle finger, Zemmour saw many people far away from him, including his chief financial assistant.
