India is reporting coronavirus cases – and deaths – in the face of severe oxygen shortages and bed bugs in its hospitals as the second-largest epidemic of the virus worsens its financial management system.
On Friday, the world’s second-most populous country was filled with just one day with about 332,730 new cases and 2,263 deaths.
Hospitals in northern and western India, including the capital of New Delhi, have become overcrowded.

India’s hospitals lack adequate ventilation
Oxygen and beds are running low and India’s major hospitals are putting up information that they do not have a place to take patients.
Max Healthcare, who oversees several hospitals in north and west India, posted the request on Twitter to provide emergency air supply to its headquarters in New Delhi.
“SOS – Less than an hour of oxygen delivery at Max Smart Hospital & Max Hospital Saket. Expect new items from INOX from 1 p.m.,” the company said.
The same phone calls from hospitals and the general public have been televised for days this week across the country.

India has recorded the world’s largest cases of coronavirus for the second day in a row, with daily deaths from COVID-19 also jumping in history.
With 332,730 new cases, the total number of cases in India has now exceeded 16 million. The death toll rose by 2,263 to 186,920, according to a study by the Ministry of Health.
India recorded 314,835 cases on Thursday, more than the United States did in January when it received 297,430 new cases. The US population has already collapsed.
A fire has killed 13 COVID-19 patients at an Indian hospital
A fire broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a hospital in the western state of Maharashtra India killing 13 COVID-19 patients, an official said.
The fire in the second room of the hospital has been extinguished and some patients seeking fresh air have been evacuated to nearby hospitals, said Dilip Shah, CEO of Vijay Vallabh Hospital in Virar, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Mumbai.
Shah said there are 90 patients at the hospital and they are investigating the cause of the fire.
On Wednesday, 24 COVID-19 patients with respirators died at a hospital in Nashik, another city in the state of Maharashtra, where their air supply was disrupted by a power outage.
Canada is banning flights from India, Pakistan
Canada has banned all air travel from India and Pakistan for 30 days due to the high number of COVID-19 cases in the region, said Transport Minister Omar Alghabra.
The ban began late Thursday, just hours after India gained more than 314,000 new world records in the last 24 hours. Freight flights from India and Pakistan will continue.
More than a million Canadians live in India, of which 100,000 Canadians are of Pakistani descent.
