Metropolitan police chief Cressida Dick has bowed down to investigate the violation of offenses near Downing Street and Whitehall saying her group is investigating “many” of the parties.
Dick told a meeting in the London Assembly that the Met had taken action after receiving information from the cabinet, while Sue Gray, a senior, was investigating the allegations.
“I can confirm that the Met is now investigating a number of incidents that took place in Downing Street and Whitehall two years ago in connection with the Covid-19 violations,” he told the committee.
He further added that the military had investigated a number of alleged incidents in Downing Street and Whitehall but suspected that the incident had not been investigated.
Gray’s investigation into the so-called partygate scandal has been delayed by the announcement of the investigation, which is due to end in the coming days. One Whitehall official said, “it is not being published this week”.
A spokesman for the cabinet said: “An investigation is under way by Sue Gray. We are in contact with the Metropolitan Police Service.”
Experts say Gray reviewed what happened at Johnson’s birthday party on June 19 2020.
The party, during the first shutdown of England’s Covid-19, was “unthinkable”, a loyal minister of the UK Prime Minister said.
But Grant Shapps, a travel secretary, said the party was organized by Downing Street staff as a shocking incident, as they tried to get Johnson out of recent criticism for violating the prison rules.
Shapps is one of several loyal servants to Johnson who has tried to lower himself the importance of the event, held in the cabinet in June 2020, was first reported by ITV News and confirmed by the Financial Times.
During the party, indoor meetings were banned. Shapps said there were fewer than 30 people in attendance at the event, which Downing Street said Johnson attended in less than 10 minutes.
When asked why interior designer Lulu Lytle, who oversees the renovation of Johnson’s Downing Street, was present, Shapps said she was not invited and “came” during the party.
The travel correspondent said that at the end of the war between the “two mechanized nations in Europe” – referring to Ukraine and Russia – he found it unfortunate that he “should talk about our experiences and” partygate “interpretations and not the most important things.
Meanwhile, Gordon Brown, the former prime minister of Labor, told ITV that what appears to be a violation of Johnson’s laws is a “moral issue”. She says: “I was not able to attend the funeral of a close relative last year.
Johnson’s loyalists are trying to boost support among MPs before the Gray report. The 54 members of the Tory are expected to initiate a vote for the Prime Minister.
