A military order was issued for 15 days as terrorist attacks continue in the volcanic area last month.
Political leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo voted Thursday to impose a 15-day war law in the east of the country, a month after removing government officials and overseeing troops in North Kivu and parts of Ituri.
Violence has been rampant in the salty eastern DRC since the end of the civil war in 2003, but insecurity has increased in the last two years.
On May 6, the government enacted a law banning the government to stop the bloodshed. The threats have continued, but Justice Minister Rose Mutombo said many fighters had lost and the military had taken over new areas.
“There is still much to be done, and the recent eruption of Nyiragongo, which took place during the siege, has prompted the government to make efforts to deal with this natural disaster,” Mutombo said.
The May 22 eruption sent flash floods outside the city of Goma, killing at least 31 people and leaving 20,000 homeless, according to United Nations figures.
The surrounding country also failed to stop to give of the at least 55 fighters Monday, perhaps the deadliest night of violence the four have seen.
On Wednesday, miners in 11 gold mines in Djugu, northeast of Ituri, were killed by a local group called the Patriotic Force and Integrationist of Congo (FPIC), Mungwalu mayor Jean-Pierre Pikilisende told the news agency. AFP.
Pikilisende says freedom fighters have come to control the area, whose gold is mined by unscrupulous artisans.
Kivu Security Tracker (KST), a respected organization that oversees violence in eastern DRC, says 12 people have been killed.
