At least seven people have been killed and nine others injured in a bomb blast near the city of Herat, officials say.

At least seven people have been killed in a minibus bombing in Herat, western Afghanistan, officials said.

“Four women were among seven people killed,” Herat hospital chief Arif Jalali told AFP on Saturday.

The Taliban leader in Herat, Mawlawi Ansari, told Reuters that nine people had been injured.

The blast was confirmed by Herat’s law office.

Spokesman Sabit Harwi said:

Herat police and the department of culture have also confirmed the bombing. No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security in Afghanistan has improved since the Taliban’s 20-year war ended when the group seized control of Kabul’s capital in August.

However, several acts of violence have been reported every week in the country, including the so-called ISIL (ISIS) regional head. Islamic State in Khorasan province, ISKP (ISIS-K).

ISKP has been prosecuted frequently fighting the Shia Hazara of the country locals with high mortality threats, as well as the area where the blast occurred Saturday near the bus station are also local people.

Herat is the third largest city in the country, close to the border with Iran, but has been relatively peaceful in recent months.

In addition to security tensions, Afghanistan’s economy is still strained as aid to the country dries up in the midst of a Taliban coup. The international community is worried about the group as the United States imposes sanctions on some of its leaders.

United Nations comparing about 23 million Afghans – about 55 percent of the population – are facing severe hunger, and about nine million are at risk of starvation in the winter.
