At least 27 bodies confined in Europe do not move swim in western Libya, the country’s Red Crescent says – the most recent catastrophe on the world’s most dangerous migration route.

The bodies of refugees, including a baby and two women, were found late Saturday in two separate locations in the town of Khoms, about 90km (55 miles) from Tripoli, the Red Crescent branch said.

Three other migrants were rescued, and a search operation was under way, it said.

“The damage to the bodies indicates that the ship was wrecked a few days ago,” a security official told AFP, adding that the risk could increase.

Pictures published by Libyan journalists showed corpses lying on the beach and buried in body bags.

The migrants may have drowned in the wreckage of recent shipwrecks from Libya, the first African-Asian migration destination trying to reach Europe.

About 1,500 migrants have drowned in the wreckage of a shipwreck in the Mediterranean this year, according to a UN migration agency.

Refugees often face dangers in Libya before boarding a crowded ship, often with immobilization and drowning.

The latest disaster comes just days after the evacuation of 160 people died within a week in similar cases, which brings the total number of lives lost this year to 1,500, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The IOM says more than 30,000 refugees have been abducted and returned to Libya.

The European Union (EU) has worked closely with the Libyan Coast Guard to reduce the number of migrants from European countries.
