The hurricane devastated Kentucky and five other U.S. states, killing scores of people and leaving damaged homes, factories and warehouses.

Films and photographs shared on television Saturday from Mayfield in Kentucky showcased torn apart houses with curved steel, fallen trees and bricks scattered on the streets and only houses left.

Pictures of the storm from US radio stations showed a black cylinder sweeping the floor, illuminated by a lightning bolt.

Several areas in Kentucky were left with about four tornadoes. One went over 320km (200 miles) in the state, Governor Andy Beshear said.

“I’m afraid there are more than 50 people dead … probably somewhere somewhere between 70 and 100, it’s devastating,” Beshear said, adding that it was “the most powerful event in Kentucky history.”

So far, at least two people have died in the Amazon basin at Edwardsville, Illinois. The roof of the house was ripped apart, and the walls of the building collapsed.

Several people were not identified as rescuers were searching for staff members detained at the scene, police chief Mike Fillback told reporters.

Here are some of the pictures that show the effects of a hurricane.
