The death toll from a collapse of a mansion in Miami rose to 78 on Friday, a number the mayor called “heartbreaking” as recovery workers struggled to find those who had been affected by the crash.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told a news conference that the evacuation mission is “progressing very fast” to bring closer families who have spent two weeks waiting for news.

“This is a staggering and distressing statistic that affects all of us deeply,” Levine Cava said of the recent deaths. 62 other people are unknown.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay announced on the radio that the sister of Paraguay’s first mother had died. Several Latin American citizens were blamed for the building when it collapsed. No one has been found alive since the first hours the building collapsed on June 24.

Researchers from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have been investigating the potential collapse of the building.

“NIST has made great strides in compiling and sending pieces of evidence from the pile,” says Levine Cava.

“They have now collected more than 200 pieces of evidence and will soon be sending scientists from a science lab in Washington to help with the analysis.”

Interest has been focused on the 2018 technical report which warned lack of structure.

The prospect of finding survivors was temporarily strengthened after the crew knocked down the house remaining on July 4, allowing access to new areas of waste. Some of the dangers that survivors can be trapped in are, especially in the basement and car park.

Gradually, the rescue workers are now looking intently find a remnant instead of survivors.
