President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa is facing a ‘relapse’ of coronavirus as it reintroduces the ban.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has also imposed a two-week ban to curb the prevalence of the highly contagious Delta coronavirus.

The worst-hit country in Africa is “facing a high risk of disease,” the president said in a televised address on Sunday.

“Our health facilities have been expanded to the end … ICU beds are in short supply,” he said as he placed the country on the fourth level, just one step down from the ground.

He banned all meetings, except funerals where the numbers were 50, and ordered a ban on the sale of alcohol. Restaurants and restaurants are no longer able to feed, and are only allowed to sell carrier or delivery food. The time to get home at night is one hour longer.

‘Destructive waves’

Officials say the number of third-wave floods – caused by the Delta nation, which was first identified in India – will surpass previous waves as the country struggles to vaccinate faster.

“We are in a crisis where all indications are likely to be worse than in the past,” he said.

“The continuation of this third wave seems to be higher than the previous two,” he added.

Al Jazeera’s Robyn Smith, speaking from Cape Town, said that, according to the government, the Delta nation is currently the most important country in South Africa.

“The president has said that the current government ban is not working and the people are not following it,” Smith said, adding that the new closure would seek to ease the burden on the country’s health sector.

South Africa reported 1,928,897 cases after reporting 15,036 cases on Sunday, down from the same date as 18,762 new cases were detected. The country has reported 59,900 coronavirus deaths.
