Hindu police stormed and set fire to the home of India’s foreign minister, police say, following a recent spate of religious violence that protesters say was sparked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Salman Khurshid, a Muslim from the main opposition Congress party, published a book last month in which he compared the Hindu ethnic group that grew up under the leadership of Modi to “extremist groups” such as ISIL (ISIS).
Police say a group of about 20 people from a Hindu group gathered outside a house in Khurshid near the northern city of Nainital on Monday.
“He shouted for help, threw stones, broke several windows, and cleared the way [the entry] and lighting a fire [to a door], “Local police chief Jagdish Chandra told AFP.

The Times of India reported that the mob burned the statue of Khurshid, fired shots and threatened the caretaker’s mother-in-law with a shotgun.
Khurshid, who was foreign minister from 2012 to 2014, was away from his family at the time. He later posted pictures of the conspiracy theories on social media.
“Shame is a useless word,” Khurshid, 68, told television.
“I was hoping to open the door for my friends who had left their calling card. Am I still wrong to say that this is not Hinduism? ” he added.

Freedom fighters say India’s minority Hindu minority has been facing a lot of discrimination and violence since the Modi Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014.
In 2020, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom declared India to be “the most troubled country” for the first time since 2004. The list went on in 2021.
Modi’s government refuses to recognize the “Hindutva” (Hindu supremacist) principles and claims that people of all faiths have equal rights.
The state of Uttarakhand, where it has recently taken place, seems to be the most popular place.
Last month, a mob of about 200 people is said to have attacked a church in the state. A local BJP official said the building was used as “suspicious meetings”.
Shashi Tharoor, a well-known lawmaker in Congress, said the attack on Khurshid’s house was “shameful”.
Khurshid “is a political leader who … always speaks in the middle, in the middle, and in the vision of the world”. “The amount of intolerance in our politics should be challenged by those in power,” Tharoor said on Twitter.
