Firefighters on Sunday battled a raging fire that erupted in the mountains below the Big Sur coast, forcing hundreds of coastal residents in the US State of California to evacuate and authorities closing its main road.
The blaze started Friday night in Palo Colorado Canyon in Big Sur and quickly spread to sea, overheating with strong winds up to 80km / h (50 mph).
The fire burned about 6 square kilometers (2.3 square kilometers) of brush and redwood trees, said Cecile Juliette, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
“The fire was made by wind and land and that gave the fire a lot of power to run,” he said on Saturday.
Officials contacted about 500 people, urging them to leave the sparsely populated area between Carmel and Big Sur. More than 250 firefighters from several organizations and volunteer groups, with the help of water jets, had about 20 percent of the blaze on Saturday evening.
“The winds are gone and this has helped us,” he said.
