Tunisians have gathered near the country’s parliament to stage protests against the so-called “conspiracy”.
Sunday meeting in Tunis was the most recent election of President Kais Saied on July 25 to overthrow the government, suspend parliament and seize control of several states, citing “imminent threat” to the country.
“People want to overthrow terrorists,” protesters chanted as they removed barriers that blocked roads leading to parliament in Bardo, the country’s capital, which led to military clashes.
Some protesters also carried placards reading, “No to intimidating journalists” and demanding “independence”.
On September 22, Saied re-enacted parts of the legislature and enacted legislation and law, preserving the courts’ jurisdiction and the power to remove ministers and pass laws.
She elected a new government in October, with Najla Bouden becoming the country’s first female minister. But the president has regained the power of his office and will lead himself.
Saied, who was elected in late 2019, feared amid growing economic woes and the COVID-19 epidemic.
Some of his enemies have accused him of seeking a new dictatorship, a decade after Tunisia’s 2011 coup that ousted longtime ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online.
