Hundreds of Palestinians have gathered in Ramallah in the West Bank to stage protests against President Mahmoud Abbas, hoping to spark a riot. death of a brave opponent in the hands of the defense.

Saturday’s protest began with hundreds of demonstrations gathered in al-Manara Square in the center of Ramallah, the PA capital.

Mothers a Nizar Banat, a freedom fighter whose death last month sparked protests, and some brothers were greeted with a round of applause and a brief speech.

Crowds marched through the town, gathering an army march until thousands were heard chanting “People want to overthrow the government,” and “Abbas, get out,” the words used in the so-called Arab Spring protests that swept through the Middle East in 2011.

In a statement from Ramallah, Nida Ibrahim of Al Jazeera said that although police are often stationed in public places in the West Bank, there was no visible group at Saturday’s protest.

“We hear that there are violent police officers on the streets around the stadium and on the roads leading to the president’s palace.

“We have seen a strong crackdown on protests last week against the death of protester PA Nizar Banat,” Ibrahim said, adding that foreign powers had condemned the shooting.

The Fatah party, led by Abbas and controls the PA, is currently holding a rally south of the West Bank in Hebron where the audience hoisted the flags of the party. PA Palestinian official TV aired the Hebron conference and ignored the show in Ramallah

State department spokesman Ned Price said earlier this week that the US was “deeply disturbed by reports that members of the Palestinian security forces were harassing and using force against protesters and journalists” during a protest rally last week.

Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Thursday that Palestinian security forces had beaten protesters with sticks and sprayed them with tear gas and stunts. He also said he appeared to be choosing female protesters, journalists and viewers, many of whom claimed to be victims.

He called on the PA to “ensure freedom of thought, expression and peaceful assembly”.
