Former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III died early Thursday, after a long illness, according to several reports.

Aquino, 61, served as the country’s 15th president from 2010 to 2016, and was replaced by a new president, Rodrigo Duterte.

According to ABS-CBN News, he was admitted to hospital last Thursday.

But she had undergone dialysis for at least five months and had just had a heart attack.

It was during the Aquino regime that Manila went to China and sued the Supreme Court in The Hague over the South China Sea dispute.

Philippines won the special case a month after Aquino resigned in 2016.
