Kim says relations between China and North Korea are crucial in the fight against foreign military forces, while Xi promises to bring about unity. “
The leaders of North Korea and China have exchanged messages of commitment to promote cooperation over the 60 years of their signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Support.
In a message to China by Xi Jinping on Sunday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said their relationship was crucial in meeting foreign forces, with Xi promising to bring about “a new” alliance, according to the North Korean news agency KCNA.
China has been the largest ally of North Korea since the two parties signed the treaty in 1961.
Meanwhile, international sanctions on Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ammunition have made Beijing more reliant on trade and other aid.
“Despite the global crisis in recent years, the interdependence of the DPRK and China is growing stronger day by day,” Kim said in a statement, KCNA said, using a letter beginning with North Korea’s name.
The agreement protects communism and peace in Asia “now that the dictatorships have been more willing to deal with their problems,” Kim said.
Xi’s message said he wanted to extend a lot of joy to the two countries and their people by strengthening their connection with Kim and by “cultivating friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries,” KCNA said.
The China-North Korea Treaty is 20 years old and was amended in 1981 and 2001.
NK News, North Korea’s governing body, said on Sunday that it expected Xi and Kim to extend the agreement for another 20 years.
