The US president, who is proud of his legacy in Ireland, has used a meeting with Johnson to explain to Washington that he is following the Protocol.
U.S. President Joe Biden has warned British Prime Minister Boris Johnson not to return to the Northern Ireland Brexit summit when they first meet at the G7 summit this week, The Times reported Monday, citing unknown individuals.
Maintaining lasting peace in Northern Ireland without allowing the United Kingdom a back door in European Union markets through the 310 miles (500 km) of Ireland was one of the most difficult issues in Brexit’s divorce.
The British-led territory was severely divided between sectarian groups after 23 years after a peace deal that the United States disrupted killed people for 30 years. Many Catholics want to join Ireland while united Protestants want to remain part of the United Kingdom.
The EU and Britain have worked to address the issue with Northern Ireland’s Brexit agreement, which makes the region a cultural hub for the United Kingdom and a single EU market.
But allies say they are opposed to the 1998 peace agreement and London says the Protocol is not as stable as it once was in the day-to-day operations in Northern Ireland.
Biden, who is proud of his legacy in Ireland, will use the meeting with Johnson on Thursday to make clear the US support for the Protocol.
He also warned that the prospects for trade relations between the United States and the United Kingdom would be dashed if they did not resolve them, according to the Times.
Biden will also explain to the EU that it hopes to stop being “big” and have a flexible approach to establishing the alliance, the newspaper said.
David Frost, who is in talks with Johnson’s Brexit, wants to address the crisis in the Brexit deal but the bottom line on trade is “very difficult,” Lucy Frazer, a government minister like Solicitor General in England and Wales, told Sky News.
