Sudan has fired Al Jazeera | Freedom of the Press News

El Musalmi El Kabbashi was arrested at an international protest rally in Sudan.

Sudanese authorities have released the head of the Al Jazeera Media Network in Khartoum, two days after he was arrested at his home in the middle of the night.

El Musalmi El Kabbashi was released Tuesday.

The military has not yet said why.

The journalist was one of hundreds of people arrested during a series of protests in Sudan against the occupation of the military last month.

Al Jazeera criticized his arrest with “very strong words”, calling the military “wrong” and urging his journalists to be allowed to work without hindrance.

The Qatari broadcaster also said it has Sudanese troops responsible for protecting all its employees.

El Kabbashi’s arrest was not the first time Sudanese authorities have named Al Jazeera.

In 2019, security forces closed the network office in Khartoum and revoked operating licenses for network operators in the country.

The arrest of El Kabbashi on Sunday came as security forces fired tear gas and tear gas at anti-sectarian protests in Khartoum and its Omdurman twins, killing at least eight people.

This brings the total number of people who have lost their lives to 23.

Thousands of people have marched through the streets of Sudan to protest against the occupation.

The protesters also protested the formation of a new governing body by an army general that did not include representatives of the Forces of Freedom and Change civilian group.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who led the military on October 25, re-elected himself as general of the ruling party on Thursday.

He also announced new members to the reform movement, including the military and former rebels on the disbanded council.

Al-Burhan insists the seizure was not a seizure but a “push to fix the transition process”.

His move came as the military was due to hand over the leadership of the Sovereign Council to the common people in the coming months.

Western nations have called on Sudanese troops to reverse the coup.
