China summons Japanese ambassador to Abe’s comments in Taiwan | Political Issues

The former Prime Minister of Japan has warned of the dire consequences that Beijing will take “the wrong way” on the island of self-government.

China’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Japanese ambassador to Beijing for an “emergency meeting” on Wednesday evening when former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his country or the United States could not stand up if China attacked Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Hua Chunying called what Abe called “wrong” and violated traditions between China and Japan during a meeting with Ambassador Shui Hideo, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Abe’s comments “publicly denounced Chinese rule and provided ruthless support to Taiwan’s independent military,” Hua said.

Speaking to the Institute for National Policy Research, a think tank in Taiwan, Abe Wednesday warned of the security and economic consequences of Chinese action against Taiwan and urged Beijing to “not take the wrong path”.

“Walking in the military can lead to economic suicide,” added the former politician.

China’s invasion of Taiwan could pose a serious threat to Japan and therefore “emergency to the Japan-US alliance”, he said.

“The people of Beijing, especially President Xi Jinping, should not have misunderstandings in this regard.”

Abe, who resigned as prime minister last year, is the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and remains a strong member of the party.

China claims that Taiwan’s independence is part of its territory and has not stopped using force to occupy the island, formerly Japan.

Since Tsai Ing-wen was elected president in 2016, Beijing has been steadfast in its assertion, and in October sent military aircraft numbers to the airport security zone in Taiwan.
