The Austrian government has ordered a nationwide shutdown of people who have not received the COVID-19 vaccine, a move that seeks to reduce the spread of the disease in the country.

The move, which begins at midnight on Sunday, prevents non-vaccinated people over the age of 12 from leaving their homes except for important things such as working, shopping, going out – or getting vaccinated.

Officials are concerned about rising mortality and that hospital staff will no longer be able to cope with the increasing number of patients with COVID-19.

“It is our duty as the Austrian government to protect the people,” Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told reporters in Vienna on Sunday. “That’s why we thought that as of Monday … there would be a closure of those who are not vaccinated.”

The closure affects about 2 million people in a country of 8.9 million people, the APA news agency reported.

The closure will last for 10 days and police have been asked to monitor people outside to make sure they have the vaccine, Schallenberg said, adding that more police will be on patrol to prevent the closure.

Non-vaccinated people can be fined up to 1,450 euros ($ 1,660) if they do not comply.

Austria has the lowest number of vaccines in Western Europe, and about 65 percent of the population have adequate vaccines.

In recent weeks, the country has suffered from the effects of coronavirus. On Sunday, it reported 11,552 new cases, up from 8,554 last week.

“With vaccine prices as they are, we are still on the wrong track,” Schallenberg said. The “embarrassing low” vaccine should have been forced to go up, he added.

The seven-day threat represents 775.5 cases per 100,000 people. In comparison, the figure is 289 in neighboring Germany, which has already grown at an all-time high.

Schallenberg also noted that although seven days HIV-positive for people living with low vaccines nowadays, the same number is rising rapidly for those without vaccines.
