Indian troops opened fire on civilians on Saturday in a remote area in northeastern India, bordering Myanmar, according to local reports.

“What led to the massacre of civilians in Oting is very serious,” he tweeted.

The incident took place in Oting village in Mon state during a crackdown on members of Assam Rifles, India’s main security force, Nagaland police chief said.

The shooting began as a car carrying 30 or more people passed through the Assam Rifles camp, officials told Reuters and The Associated Press not to be named.

“The officers had information about other terrorists in the area and upon seeing the vehicle they thought the miners were rebels and shot and killed 6 workers,” the police chief told Reuters.

Assam Rifles members retaliated, and in the second attack eight other people and a security guard were among those killed, the official said.
