Algerian Prime Minister resigns following election results | Election Issues

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has approved the resignation of Abdelaziz Djerad and has appointed him an acting Prime Minister.

The President of Algeria has approved the resignation of the Prime Minister, paving the way for a new government to follow the results of the parliamentary elections.

According to Algerian president Thursday, Abdelmadjid Tebboune agreed to step down under Abdelaziz Djerad and be appointed prime minister until a new prime minister is appointed.

Djerad’s resignation follows a June 12 parliamentary election that was marred by a handful of candidates. there is no winner in general two years later they staged protests and riots.

The vote was canceled due to expiration Hirak demonstrations movement, and with only 23%, the turnout was the lowest ever elected in Algeria.

The National Liberation Front (FLN), Algeria’s largest party, is the winner of the election, with 98 seats in 407 parliamentary seats.

The results were much better than expected from FLN, which stemmed from the long-running Algerian war of independence from France in 1962 and was the only party in the country until the first few elections in 1990.

But longtime party president Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s party was thought to be in disarray after the ailing president he quit his job under stress from the war following several weeks of Hirak demonstrations in early 2019.

New political environment

According to Algerian law, the president has begun contacting the leaders of the winning parties to elect a new prime minister after agreeing to resign.

Military officials believe that replacing parliament and the legislature is the best way to address the crisis in 10 years, a Reuters source said. The Hirak exhibition team wants to eliminate the entire system.

Independent candidates won 84 seats by the Islamist-leaning Movement of Society for Peace 65, while the Democratic National Rally won 58 seats.

The Party won 48 seats, while the National Building Movement won 39 seats, followed by the Justice and Development Front with two seats.

With this in mind, a minimum agreement of at least three parties is needed to create a 204-member parliament.

A new parliament will be formed in July, before naming the Prime Minister and forming a new political government.

Algeria has continued to supply oil to southern European countries and is a United States ally in the fight against militant groups in the region.

The new government has to deal with economic and financial crises due to falling oil prices.
