The Chinese president says only the Communist Party can save China and that the people and the party cannot be divided.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told a gathering in Beijing that China’s “persecution” period was over and that anyone trying to separate the party from the Chinese people would be ruined as the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party takes place in China’s capital.
Speaking from the balcony above a photo of Mao Zedong in Tiananmen Square, Xi spoke of the party’s success since its inception in 1921 – how it transformed China from an “oppressive” spy agency to a “powerful tax market”.
“Only socialism can save China,” said Xi, who was wearing a black Mao suit. “And the only socialist with Chinese culture is the one who can influence China.”
The China Communist Party defeated the Patriots in the country’s civil war in 1949 and Mao Zedong declared the People’s Republic of China a ploy to eradicate extreme poverty. China is now the world’s second-largest economy.
Katrina Yu of Al Jazeera, speaking from Beijing, said Xi’s message was that the party had “kept its promises” and made “China a great nation”.
The festivities came as Beijing traded concerns – as tensions escalated with countries including the United States and Australia – and its targets west of Xinjiang, as well as Hong Kong and Tibet. There are also questions about the COVID-19 epidemic, which erupted in the center of Wuhan city, and continues to cause global unrest.
Xi warned that any attempt except the party and the people “should fail”.
“We will not allow such a thing to happen,” he said.
The centenary celebrations began with flies as about 30 aircraft made “100” in the air above the cheering crowds.
Xi, who removed the two-term presidency and is known as the most powerful leader in the country since Mao, was joined by other border leaders south of Forbidden City.
The results released on Wednesday show that party membership rose by 2.43 million last year, the highest increase since Xi became President in 2013.
