A video containing Ramdev’s remarks began circulating in the media, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), an organization representing the country’s doctors, met with the teacher.

“He (Ramdev) despised the dedication of more than 1,200 doctors who gave their lives in humanitarian work during the epidemic,” IMA said on Saturday.

The Resident Doctors Association at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in New Delhi also condemned Ramdev’s demands, “take action” against him.

Ramdev’s company, Patanjali Yogpeeth, released a statement on Saturday, saying “it has nothing to do with modern scientists and modern scientists.”

But an apology that lasted less than 24 hours. On Monday, Ramdev turned to allopathy, asking if he had any of the ailments he had written in an open letter.

“If allopathy works well, why do allopathic doctors get sick and does allopathy have any cure for the malignant condition?” He asked.

Dr Jaswant of the Resident Doctors Association at AIIMS told Al Jazeera that “the language of (Ramdev’s) letter is not apologetic”.

“The government needs to take action against it because of its rude and embarrassing remarks to doctors,” he said.

Dr Mukesh Verma of the IMA contacted the police in Delhi and met with senior police officers to register Ramdev’s case. But no initial fire report (FIRE) has not been registered.

“Father (Ramdev) is a very strong man, very similar to the minister of the union and more than the prime minister of many states. His closeness to power is well known and that is why I think the police do not want to write him,” Verma told Al Jazeera, calling Vardhan’s letter to the teacher “eyewash”.

The IMA’s official chapter in Uttarakhand said “suffering from the wrath of doctors” in what Ramdev said “could jeopardize our fight against this devastating plague”.

Ramdev’s Patanjali did not respond to a request from Al Jazeera for comment. Detailed inquiries were sent to them by email.

‘Ramdev loves arguments’

Ramdev, who counts some of India’s most powerful politicians in the BJP as friends and advisers, is not uncommon.

In February this year, Ramdev, in front of two ministers – Vardhan and Nitin Gadkari – said Coronil had received a certificate from the World Health Organization (WHO).

One month later, the IMA said the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) had not given permission to use Coronil to treat COVID-19. The WHO also stated that it has not reviewed or confirmed that Patanjali’s drug is effective.

But the controversy has not stopped Patanjali from selling Coronil weapons nationwide as a “protective aid” to combat the virus.

On Tuesday, the BJP government in Haryana state announced it would distribute 100,000 Coronil weapons among COVID-19 patients for free.

“We respect and support all other remedies including ayurveda, homeopathy, naturopathy, allopathy and others,” BJP spokesman Gopal Krishna Agarwal told Al Jazeera.

Doctors feel that Ramdev is trying to “create a false alarm and public outrage in order to sell illegal and illegal drugs called drugs and make money at a public price”.

“Ramdev loves to argue. He is trying to use this to improve his business,” said Dr Jaswant.

Dr Verma says the businessman can provoke controversy for two reasons.
