US envoys to Vienna for indirect Iran nuclear talks | Powerful Nuclear Issues

The Biden government still believes that reviving the nuclear deal is a ‘good’ option, the State Department said.

The United States will start again indirectly nuclear negotiations and Iran in Vienna, the State Department has confirmed, saying Biden’s administration is offering the talks “another opportunity” after making little progress in negotiations last week.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters Wednesday that Biden’s special envoy to Iran, Robert Malley, and his delegation were “ready to take part in talks over the weekend.”

European Chancellor Enrique Mora has previously confirmed that talks will continue on Thursday after seventh round of negotiations was suspended last Friday.

US and European officials have questioned Iran’s willingness to resume a treaty, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), following talks last week – the first under the caretaker Iranian President. Ibrahim Raisi.

Price said the talks were called off on Friday, less than a week after it began, as it was “clear” that Iran had not come up with a “deep intent”. But he added that renewing the agreement is still a “good option”.

“We continue to believe that a return to JCPOA is possible,” Price said. “That’s why we’re coming back for more – to continue the seventh tour in Vienna.”

Iran says it gave two minds last week “based on the contents of the 2015 agreement” to revive the agreement.

On Wednesday, Price said Washington was preparing to negotiate a return to the treaty “in good faith” and resume talks he left behind after a sixth round in June before the presidency began.

Asked if the US was giving Iran another chance to return to the Vienna talks, a US spokesman said: “We are offering negotiations – negotiations to get back on track – another opportunity because it is in our best interests.”
