The UN ambassador said talks with Sudanese groups would begin on Monday.
The United Nations mission in Sudan said so negotiation begins Monday with the aim of launching talks to resolve the country’s political crisis after the coup in October.
The military coup disrupted the electoral process as the military agreed to share power with civilian groups following the ouster of former leader Omar al-Bashir during the 2019 riots.
It also halted the economic downturn that Sudan had begun to experience after decades of secession and sanctions. Fighting against the security forces at frequent demonstrations since the attack left more than 60 civilians dead and many other casualties.
The first round of talks, which will begin on Monday, will focus on a major dialogue for candidates in the second round of direct or indirect dialogue between the various players, UN special envoy Volker Perthes told a news conference in Khartoum on Monday.
“We want to move quickly … we are starting this afternoon with the first group of government agencies. Every day we will have a mix-up we are talking to,” he said.
It would be difficult to set a deadline for negotiations, Perthes added. “Time is of the essence, we know that. There are many challenges to what is happening in Sudan and to us. ”
Unless a new transition to a viable electoral system is reached, Sudan’s economic woes could worsen and instability could spread inside and outside its borders, experts and ambassadors say.
“I believe that these talks can serve as a way to build confidence and help reduce violence,” Perthes said.
The UN spokesman said there was “no objection” from the military. But the initial response of large groups of ordinary people was warm.
“We have not received any information about the UN’s activities,” said Jaafar Hassan, a spokesman for the Forces for Freedom and Change, a pro-democracy group.
“We are ready to take part in the talks as long as the aim is to resume democratic change and overthrow the dictatorship, but we are adamant if the negotiations seek to end the conspiracy,” he told AFP. Monday.
The Sudanese Professionals Association, another large group of civilians, said on Sunday that it was rejecting UN-sponsored talks.
