The secret files contained details about the navigation that led Russia to launch a shooting spree off the coast of Crimea
The British government is investigating how private security documents, detailing the naval operations that led Russia to launch a bombing on the Crimean coast, were found at a bus stop in England.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Sunday that an employee had filed documents he lost last week and that an investigation had begun.
“It should not happen,” Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland prime minister, told Sky News. “It was said correctly at the time … there is an internal investigation into what happened.”
One of the men, who wanted to remain anonymous, contacted the BBC after finding 50 pages of information about what happened behind a Kent bus early Tuesday.
The papers also included a document outlining Russia’s potential for the HMS Defender’s voyage through Ukrainian waters off the coast of Crimea on Wednesday, according to the BBC, while another suggested a British military presence in Afghanistan.
The MoD said the HMS Defender had “passed innocence in Ukrainian waters in accordance with international law” and that “all that could happen” was taken into account in making “practical decisions”.
HMS Defender is part of the UK Carrier Strike Group heading to the Indo-Pacific region.
However, it was announced earlier this month that they were temporarily parting with the group to do their “missions” in the Black Sea.
The 45th anniversary of the genocide sparked an altercation with Russian troops on Wednesday as they crossed the waters of the southern Crimea Peninsula, which Russia illegally seized from Ukraine in 2014.
Moscow responded by having several planes covering the ship at various locations, the lowest at about 152 meters.
