In a major change, the UAE says the new working week will be 4.5 days, Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday to create a new week for civil servants.
The United Arab Emirates says all government agencies have adopted a new working week plan that will consist of four and a half days, Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday to create a new week.
The move, announced by WAM on Tuesday, will take effect on January 1, 2022, making the working week in line with Western schedule. The UAE currently has a Friday-Saturday weekend, which is in line with the example set by other countries in the region.
The change “is in line with the UAE’s vision of improving global economic and business competitiveness, as well as in line with global developments,” the Abu Dhabi state press office said.

Under this new model, workers will work eight hours from Monday to Thursday but are expected to work 4.5 hours a day on Friday.
Government workers will also be allowed to choose “flexible jobs or household chores” on Friday.
Meanwhile, Friday sermons and prayers will be held at 1:15 pm.
In many Islamic countries, Friday is often considered the most holy day of the week. In some neighboring countries, shops and retailers are banned from opening prayers before Friday.
The notice did not specify whether the amendment would also apply to employees in institutions or schools. Local media reports say more is expected to be revealed in the coming days.
The change should be followed by the private sector and schools, as it did in 2006 when the week changed from Saturday to Wednesday – a working week followed in many Islamic countries, such as Iran and Afghanistan.
The UAE last year took steps to boost its foreign exchange and talent, including bringing in long-term visas. So it is modified rules related to cohabitation, alcohol and social norms.
