Twelve people killed in land dispute in western Guatemala: officials | Issues of Human Rights

The long-running land dispute sparked a dispute that killed one mother, three children and one police officer.

Guatemalan officials say 12 people have been killed in the village of Chiquix, 155km (96 miles) east of the capital, as long-running conflict has sparked tensions between residents of the two towns.

Victims of violence against women and three children, government officials said on Saturday.

One police officer was killed in the clash, and two others were wounded.

Guatemalan police have said in a statement that they are in talks with regional leaders to prevent future violence.

The Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman also recommended strengthening the police in the area.

A land dispute, which erupted more than 100 years ago, caused controversy in Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán.
