The white rhinoceros, which can weigh up to two tons, traveled 3,400 miles[3,400 km]as part of a program to restore biodiversity.
Nearly 30 white rhinos have arrived in Rwanda on a long journey from South Africa on a Boeing 747 and conservationists are said to be one of the largest ever growing plants.
These large animals, which can weigh up to two tons, traveled 3,400 kilometers (2,100 kilometers) from Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa as part of a rehabilitation program, which was eliminated by poaching since the 1970s.
Initially, white rhinos abounded in sub-Saharan Africa as a result of poaching by Europeans, and later the plague killed them.
The denominations began their 40-hour journey to a new home in Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda following months of preparation, said African Parks, led by Prince Harry of the United Kingdom.
“We needed to calm them down to reduce their stress, which is dangerous, and manage them,” said Peter Fearnhead, CEO of African Parks.
The animals were loaded onto a rented Boeing 747 and placed in two grass piles – each as big as a football field – upon arrival at the park.
Afterwards, they will be allowed to walk around the main park, officials said.
“This will give them the opportunity to grow up in a safe environment from South Africa where three are killed daily by poachers,” said park manager Jes Gruner.
Moving wildlife is not dangerous. In 2018, four of the six black rhinos that were displaced died a few months after arriving in Chad.
The southern white rhinoceros, one of two species of white rhinoceros, now appears to be endangered and about 20,000 people remain, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
It is known to be at high risk by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The northern white rhinoceros is gone, leaving only two women alive.
Scientists are trying to save the species from extinction by harvesting the eggs of two animals, Fatu, and using the sperm of two dead men to produce embryos in an unprecedented reproductive system, their last chance to survive.
