The past and the shameful ‘painful memory’, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says.
The remains of 215 children, some three to three years old, were found on the site of a former nursery school, which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described as tragic on Friday.
The children were students at Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia which closed in 1978, according to Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Nation, which said the remains were obtained with the help of a radar specialist.
“We had the knowledge in our area that we were able to prove it,” Chief Rosanne Casimir of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc said in a statement. “Right now we have more questions than answers.”
Canada is school system, which forcibly separated Indian children from their families, and created a “cultural genocide”, a six-year study of what went missing in 2015.
The report cites horrific abuse, rape, malnutrition and other abuses perpetrated by more than 150,000 school-going children, who are run by Christian churches instead of Ottawa from the 1840s to the 1990s.
It found that more than 4,100 children had died on their way to boarding school. The deaths of 215 children buried in a former Canadian high school are believed to have been excluded and appear to have been unlicensed until their discovery.
Trudeau wrote in a tweet that the story “breaks my heart – it is a painful reminder of the dark and shameful chapter of our country’s history”.

In 2008, the Canadian government apologized for the inconvenience.
Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Nation says it is affiliated with the coroner and reaches out to the rural people whose children attend the school. Expected to have a mid-June start.
In a statement, British Columbia Chief Assembly Chief of the First Nations Regional Terry Teegee said finding a cemetery like this was an “important task” that “relieves the grief and loss of the First Nations in Britain”.
