The Pulitzer Prize commented on a young man who filmed the murder of George Floyd
Darnella Frazier, a young man himself documented the assassination of George Floyd last summer, he said received a special comment from the Pritzer Prize board. If not because of Frazier’s actions, the only record we could have of Floyd’s death was the Minneapolis police press published on May 25th, 2020. 200-word document does not mention that former police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. After he testified in Chauvin’s case, the video confirmed he had helped him.
On Friday, the Pulitzer Prize said it had decided to accept Frazier “in bravery of the assassination of George Floyd, a film that promoted protests against police brutality around the world, and highlighted the important role citizens play in seeking justice and justice for journalists.” and 17 years old when he filmed the film, he was on his way to the same store with his cousin when he saw what was going on between Floyd and Minneapolis police. He grabbed Floyd’s last minute, including repeatedly pleading “I can’t breathe.”
This is not Frazier’s first prize for what he did. Last year, he became known from PEN America. “A lot of people call me a hero even though I don’t see myself. I was in the right place at the right time,” Frazier wrote. Post on Facebook one-year anniversary of the death of Floyd. “Behind this smile, behind the rewards, behind the announcement, I’m a girl who tries to heal from the things I’m reminded of every day.”
According to the Pulitzer Prize office, some amateur artists have won in the past, and some of the most successful recordings may have featured someone shooting their phone. However, Frazier’s award says more about how mobile phones have helped citizen journalism in recent years. Other than that, it was Ramsey Orta and her death video for Eric Garner that made “I can’t breathe” and cried bitterly in the face of police brutality targeting racist groups.
