Senate is voting against punishing the president for a business venture revealed in the Pandora Paper scandal.
Chile’s Senate has voted not to oust President Sebastian Pinera over allegations of corruption in a mining company’s business venture.
Tuesday’s Senate vote dropped by 29 votes out of two thirds of all those required to run against the President.
It abolished the opposition process that won a landslide victory last week.
Pinera is due to step down in March next year and will not run in the by-elections on Sunday.
“It was a difficult time for the Pinera case,” said Lucia Newman of Al Jazeera, based in Santiago, the capital of Chile. “Many believe that the removal of the president just days before the national election or five months to step down could disrupt peace.”
Tuesday’s Senate proceedings also included a heated debate and defensive speeches against the center-right President.
In the end, Pinera’s allies reached a climax in preventing the opposition from gaining the necessary votes, much bigger barriers than the simple ones in a small house.
The vote saves Pinera – a billionaire businessman – from not only being removed from office but also from a five-year term.
The lawsuit was filed in a series of so-called Pandora Papers, articles that exposed maritime political and business events around the world.
It was revealed that one of Pinera’s sons had used seafood companies in the British Virgin Islands to sell a Dominga mining project, which his family owned.
The final sale of the mine in 2011 relied on the government to reject the declaration of northeastern Chile as a nature reserve. The government, which at the time was led by Pinera during his first term as president, did not name, which was asked by environmentalists.
The next government also did not name it.
Pinera, one of Chile’s richest men, has denied any wrongdoing and said he was challenged in the 2017 investigation into the action.
The presidency said Pinera’s first term as President, from 2010 to 2014, did not start when he agreed to sell, and government officials and courts ruled in 2017 that no charges had been filed and that Pinera had not been involved.
It also said that all taxes in Chile were paid.
Luz Ebensperger’s right-back was one of the senators who voted not to remove the president.
