Thirteen birthmarks – which are different from those with COVID-19 infections in the early days of the Chinese epidemic – were miraculously removed from the online repository last year but have now been found.
Jesse Bloom, a biochemist and virologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, found that the countries were removed from a list of questions asked by scientists in Wuhan, China. But with the advent of the Internet, he was able to retrieve what was stored on Google Cloud.
These results do not really change the way scientists understand about sources of COVID-19 – including the question of whether a coronavirus naturally spreads from animal to human or to escape the dangers of a laboratory. But their removal raises concerns that a secret from the Chinese government has blocked international efforts to understand how COVID-19 was discovered.

But some scientists were not impressed. “It doesn’t add anything to the cause,” Robert Garry of Tulane University in New Orleans told BuzzFeed News via email. Garry said the Huanan market or other markets in Wuhan could remain a source of COVID-19.
Bloom is one of the 18 scientists in May wrote a letter criticizing WHO and China research on the origins of SARS-CoV-2. The scientists say the WHO-China report failed to “reason correctly” on the controversial notion that coronavirus naturally spreads from animal to human or to escape from the lab – an idea which the report called “extremely unlikely.” Following the WHO-China report published, the US and 13 other governments he complained that “it does not have access to all, the original and the examples.”

However, it is not known if the results were posted online in another database.
“There is no valid scientific reason for the search,” Bloom wrote in a statement, noting that the countries “were removed to prevent their concealment.” He added, “a concerted effort to curb the spread of the epidemic.”
Although the exceptions were removed, Garry also noted that important changes of their kind were still printed on the table in the final papers of Wuhan’s party. “Jesse Bloom has not discovered anything new that is not already in the scientific community,” Garry told BuzzFeed News, accusing Bloom of writing his articles “in an inflammatory and unscientific way.”
Bloom wrote to Wuhan’s investigators to ask why the countries had been removed, but no response was received. Li and Liu also did not respond promptly to a question from News BuzzFeed.
This is not the first time that scientists have complained about data deletion that could help answer questions about where COVID-19 originated.
