Protests continue in Ramallah after death of freedom fighters | Palestinian News

Palestinian protesters and security forces he argues in the West Bank suburb of Ramallah on Saturday, the third day of protests sparked by the arrest of a freedom fighter after his arrest.

Nizar Banat, a 43-year-old Hebron man known for his Palestinian Authority (PA) television scandal, died on Thursday shortly after entering a police station to seize his home and arrest him, the family said.

On Saturday, hundreds marched through the streets of Ramallah, the PA seat of the West Bank, urging Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to step down.

Protester Ismat Mansour said Banat’s death was simply “the tip of the iceberg” as he blamed PA “mountain of corruption” and ordered elections to be held.

Some carried placards to the PA that simply said “get out”.

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. A spokesman for the AFP press conference said the protesters threw stones at security forces, who responded by triggering a tear-jerking crowd to deal with the crowd.

Banat registered as a voter in the Palestinian parliamentary election, which was held in May until Abbas suspended them for some time.

The Banat family claimed that soldiers used pepper spray, beat him severely and dragged him to a car.

Samir Abu Zarzour, a doctor who did the photograph, said Banat’s body injuries showed he was hit in the head, chest, neck, legs and arms, just an hour before he was arrested and died.
