This is the pope’s first hospital visit since he was elected pope in 2013.
Pope Francis is doing well after undergoing surgery on his large intestine, the Vatican said on Sunday.
The Prophet Matteo Bruni said in his remarks that the 84-year-old pope had “responded” to the operation, which took place under general aesthesia.
He did not elaborate on the procedure and did not say how long the pope would remain in the hospital.
The Vatican has already announced that the pope will operate at Gemelli Polyclinic, a Roman Catholic teaching hospital in Rome.
The news came just three hours after Francis enthusiastically greeted Saint Peter Square and told them he was going to Hungary and Slovakia in September.
This was the pope’s first hospital visit since he was elected pope in 2013.
The Vatican said the pope was diagnosed with “symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon”, meaning a decrease in the large intestine.
The operation was to be performed by Dr Sergio Alfieri, director of the department of gastrive digestion.
Pray for the pope
One week earlier, Francis had used his form Sunday to ask people to pray for special prayers, which, perhaps, he also mentioned the operation he had planned.
“I beg you to pray for the pope, pray in a special way,” Francis asked parishioners on June 27.
“The pope wants your prayers,” he said, thanking them and saying, “I know you will do this.”
The diverticulum emerges as a sac through the intestinal walls.
When diverticula is burned – a common condition, especially in the elderly – a narrowing of the intestinal tract can sometimes occur, and surgery is required, according to gastroenterological experts.
This type of surgery can be performed with general anesthesia, perhaps with laparoscopic help. Sometimes a restoration of the affected part of the gut is required.
Francis is in good health, but had one of his lungs removed as a child.
He also suffers from sciatica, in which the nerves affect the back and leg, causing him to sometimes skip the repaired form.
The pope had a seat for election last week, including holding a Tuesday Mass to commemorate the Catholic Feast of Honor Saints Peter and Paul, and over the weekend, he is leading special prayers in Lebanon.
On June 28, he also had a secret audience at the Vatican with United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken. In both cases, Francis seemed to be happy.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella offered “loving ideas” on behalf of all Italians.
Mattarella added that she wanted a “good and speedy recovery” for the pope.
Gemelli’s surgeons performed surgery on a papal patient, especially Pope John Paul II, who had Vatican evidence that he had a benign tumor in his intestines that was removed in 1992.
