The Indian military has killed three suspected terrorists in a shootout in India-run Kashmir, officials said, sparking anti-Indian protests and clashes between the military and civilians.
Indian troops on Wednesday said militants fired shots at soldiers and police as militants surrounded the southern province of Pulwama and a point where other rebels were hiding.
The military has taken revenge and shut down the rebels in the house, according to the statement. Three militants were killed during the eight-hour operation and two firearms and ammunition were recovered from the scene, he said.
The villagers say soldiers have set fire to one house and detonated another with a bomb, a popular anti-terrorist tactic used by Indian troops in the Himalayas.
Authorities have issued a crackdown on the town of Pulwama and banned the use of the internet over the phone, a move aimed at making anti-Indian protests difficult and preventing the distribution of videos.
Following this, anti-Indian protesters threw government troops and chanted slogans calling for the end of Indian rule in the region. Government officials have fired tear gas at protesters. No one was injured during the attack.
Locals say government forces have detained several people and forced them to stand in front of them as shields in the war.
Wednesday’s war comes as violence in the region escalates, with divisions between India and Pakistan and nuclear warlords claiming both.
Last week, local authorities fired the Kashmiris from government service for opposing rebel groups. They included the two sons of a Kashmiri rebel leader who lives in Kashmir in Pakistan as well as two police officers.
The Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989. Many in the predominantly Muslim region support the rebellion against the unification of the region, either under Pakistani rule or as an independent state.
India says Kashmir’s uprising is “Pakistan-sponsored terrorism”. Pakistan denies the allegations, and many Kashmiris consider it a legitimate cause.
Thousands of people, rebels and government groups have been killed in the conflict.
