The son of a powerful man of old Ferdinand Marcos is coming out as the leader of the May elections.
Opposition groups called for the death of Ferdinand Marcos, the son of a powerful Philippine president, in the run-up to next year’s presidential election.
The group, dubbed Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses and Martial Law, issued a statement banning Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Wednesday.
Former Congress leader Satur Ocampo, one of the founding members of the group, said the request, as given by another group, stems from Marcos’ decision to serve more than 20 years for tax evasion.
“Officials who violate internal finance laws are not always allowed to hold public office and participate in elections,” Ocampo, a former Marcos dictator, told Reuters, citing a code issue. Marcos Jr., also known as Bongbong, was the frontrunner in the May election.
The powerful man, who died in exile in 1989, ruled the Philippines for almost 20 years until he won in 1986 in a “people power” revolution.
His wife and children repeatedly argue that billions of dollars in state property were stolen during the Marcos regime, estimated at 1987 to be 10 billion dollars.
The court ruled that Marcos Jr. was guilty of tax evasion in 1995 for failing to file a tax return from 1982 to 1985. The appellate court upheld the case in 1997.

Marcos Jr. was elected governor, congressman, and in 2010, as senator even though he was convicted.
Ocampo said “this does not mean they will never be raised again”.
The Electoral Commission convened the first meeting on November 26 to discuss the failure to lodge a petition filed with political prisoners, human rights groups and medical organizations against Marcos.
Marcos, 64, said the petition was “unprofitable and unjustified”.
He announced Tuesday that the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte is he agreed to be the vice president’s representative, confirming weeks of alliances between the two powerful families.
