The PA wants the US to intervene as Israel approves thousands of homes in the West Bank near Jerusalem.

Israel has given initial approval to a plan that could expand the boundaries of Jerusalem’s municipalities by building thousands of new illegal settlements in the West Bank’s suburbs around the city, drawing the Palestinian demand for Washington’s intervention.

On Wednesday, the city of Jerusalem lit up what it described as a new eastern northeastern border on the West Bank, near the Palestinian city of Ramallah. The site, formerly a plane from Qalandiya, is known as Israelis Atarot.

The airport, which was closed after the explosion of the Second Intifada in 2000, was designated in the list of former US President Donald Trump in the Middle East as a tourist destination in Palestine. It is located between the Palestinian Territories at Kafr Akab and the Qalandiya refugee camp.

The plan, which requires additional legal steps, is for 3,000 houses to be built, with a view to adding another 6,000 at the end, Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor Arieh King told Reuters.

Israeli settlements are considered illegal by international law.

The two-state treaty established by the Oslo Accords in 1993 recognized East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state made up of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Israel claims the whole city of Jerusalem with its undivided capital.

US-sponsored peace talks between the two parties were suspended in 2014. Washington recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, without clearly confirming what he was saying throughout the city.

“The permanent plan seeks to end the separation of Jerusalem from our remote Palestinian territory … with the aim of bringing about Israel, Judaise it and adding,” the Palestinian Foreign Minister said in a statement.

It urged the US and other authorities to “immediately intervene to stop the operation of these colonial plans”.

The US ambassador to Jerusalem had no immediate comment.

An estimated 475,000 Israeli Jews live in villages in the West Bank.

The growth of Israeli settlement in the West Bank that was inhabited and in East Jerusalem has continued under every Israeli government since 1967.

However, construction has grown significantly in recent years under former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with significant growth in the US Trump administration, which Palestinians criticize for favoring Israel.
