NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy have awarded three $ 5m contracts to develop weapons that could be used to transport people and goods to Mars one day.
Nuclear power has lost much of its popularity in many parts of the world, but the sky is the limit when it comes to space.
The U.S. government is using the expertise of Blue Origin’s location by Jeff Bezos, General Electric Hitachi Nuclear Energy and other companies to develop nuclear weapons that can travel at high speeds – to Mars and beyond.
NASA and the Department of Energy have awarded three $ 5 million contracts to develop nuclear weapons, which could be used to transport people and goods to Mars or to run scientific missions out of the sun, say space experts.
Lockheed Martin Corp. Security Contractors and Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc., as well as drone manufacturers General Atomics and BWX Technologies Inc., a manufacturer of nuclear and oil weapons, are among the companies doing this.
“These agreements are an important part of the development of operational equipment that will one day be able to enhance new services and innovation,” Jim Reuter, an assistant to NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, said in a statement.
Nuclear weapons are much more efficient than chemical-powered rockets, meaning they have the promise of faster navigation, more space, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Currently, nuclear power now produces about 10% of the world’s electricity, dropping from a peak of 18% in the 1990’s.
It can take several years to develop space technology, which encounters major obstacles. Although nuclear facilities have been used for many years in naval and aircraft operations, the installation of one on a volcanic rocket poses a serious threat.
Nuclear activity is coming to a head in the wake of the resumption of other activities, as the US government looks to Mars and prepares for the first moon-building mission in decades.

General Electric Co developed a number of weapons of the 1970s- and 1980s that derive power from hot water and are at the heart of US nuclear history.
Recently, the company has developed a small machine that does not require the same construction, through its partnership with Hitachi Ltd. Development and interest in major nuclear power have declined in recent years due to the increase and damage after the 2011 Fukushima, Japan, meltdown.
