Victims of the tragedy in south-central Sweden were members of an air travel club.
A small plane carrying skydivers crashed outside the Swedish city of Orebro on Thursday night, killing nine people aboard, police said.
The dead included a pilot and eight passengers, police said.
The victims were members of a space club, according to Orebro County Governor Maria Larsson.
Carl-Johan Linde of the Swedish Maritime Administration, who oversees air traffic control, told SVT that the crash must have occurred “because” the plane took off.
The plane caught fire due to what appeared to be an open field.
“There were no rescue lives,” said Per-Ove Staberyd, a common firefighter who oversees the work of firefighters and other first responders.
Police received a report of the accident just before 7:30 pm (17:30 GMT) and quickly identified it as a “serious problem”, deputy state police chief Niclas Hallgren said Friday.
He said investigating the accident was a “difficult task”. “It will take time,” added Hallgren.
The officer declined to comment further on the victims or to consider the cause of the accident. The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority immediately dispatched the team to the devastated site outside Orebro, located 164km (102 miles) west of Stockholm.
The Dagens Nyheter newspaper found that the aircraft was a single engine, De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver.
Prime Minister Stefan Lofven wrote on Twitter that he was “deeply saddened and disappointed” when he heard about the accident, and also spoke of “great sorrow”.
Flags flew in the middle of a bridge in Orebro, and the Prime Minister said at a press conference that Friday was “the day of mourning in Sweden”.
