Nigeria suspended Twitter after deleting a Presidential decree threatening to punish dissidents.

Nigeria will lift the ban on Twitter from midnight (23:00 GMT) later after a social networking site promised to open a local office, among other agreements made with West African officials, the official said on Wednesday.

The Nigerian government shut down Twitter on June 4 after withdrawing a statement from President Muhammadu Buhari threatening to punish separatists. Telecoms companies later restricted access to Nigerian users.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, head of the National Information Technology Development Agency, said Buhari had given permission for the suspension.

“Twitter has agreed to take action to respect Nigerian law and the country’s culture and the history with which such laws were established…,” Abdullahi said.

The company will work with the federal government and a number of companies “to establish a code of conduct in line with international best practice, which applies to almost all developed countries,” it said.

“Therefore, a [federal government] lifts the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria from midnight on 13 January 2022. “

Abdullahi, who also chaired the technical committee liaison with Nigerian officials via Twitter, said the US company had agreed to appoint a representative to negotiate with Nigerian authorities and comply with local taxes.
