The final results show that those who participated in the independent referendum were 43.90 percent, as the petition to abstain was strongly followed.

The New Caledonia independence movement has refused referendum results, which strongly endorsed the Pacific region that remained in France, with the final results showing that almost two thirds of the people refused to vote or return empty-handed or empty ballots.

The coalition said in a statement on Monday that it “does not recognize the legitimacy or validity of the vote.”

“This referendum did not honor the spirit or the letter of the Noumea treaty,” he said.

96.49 per cent of the votes cast in Sunday’s referendum were against independence, while only 3.51 per cent favored it.

Final results published by the French High Commission in Noumea on Monday showed 43.9 percent.

Voters stood at 56.13 percent, empty votes at 1.43 percent and empty voters at 1.56 percent.

Kanaks, who favors independence, has asked not to take part in the referendum on France’s refusal to postpone the vote in September.

France’s decision to vote against the Kanaks’ demands criticized the neighboring Pacific Islands, which are still embroiled in colonialism.

Speaking earlier on France Inter radio, the French foreign minister defended the incident, saying it had legitimate power.

“Despite the large number of voters, the legitimacy is a vote with the same weight as the previous two who returned the ‘No’ vote,” said Sebastien Lecornu, referring to the previous two referendums in 2018 and 2020.

He acknowledged that “politics means something: we must look at these divisions”.

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.

“Communication is undermined by the French government’s inability to reconcile its Pacific interests with its responsibility to overthrow our country,” he said in a statement.

President Emmanuel Macron saw a “serious threat to self-control” in a message written on Sunday, but said France could be “proud” of the more than 30 years created to end the islands.

Residents were asked in three separate referendums whether they wanted to leave.

Having rejected independence in 2018 and last year, the islanders were summoned on Sunday to make a final statement on whether they wanted New Caledonia to “accept full sovereignty and independence”.

Gradually the vote was one of the largest areas outside France with about 10 percent of the world’s five warehouses, which are used to make stainless steel, batteries, and cell phones.

The islands are also a major part of what France claims to be a Pacific power, with New Caledonia granting Paris independence to the surrounding sea, and acting as a battlefield.

Experts suspect that New Caledonia, an independent state, could be closer to Beijing, which has established economic and political links on some Pacific islands.

Macron said a “turning point” was now set to lead Paris to grant political independence to the islands, which are divided by racial divisions between Europeans and Indians.
