The court has reclaimed a small house in Nepal and ordered Sher Bahadur Deuba to be appointed the new Prime Minister.
Nepal’s Supreme Court has reinstated its parliament, which was dissolved by the acting Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in May, and ordered that his colleague Bah Sherur Deuba be appointed Prime Minister.
Monday’s move is a matter of deep concern for Oli, who has not been able to get a majority in Parliament and wants to force a new election. Dissolution of Parliament on May 22.
Oli’s move sparked legal turmoil in the Himalayan state and marked his second attempt to oust parliament in recent months in the first attempt in December 2020, following his party split, which was overturned by the Supreme Court in February.
When Nepal’s parliament was re-established, Oli stopped voting on May 10. Before running for office, he advised Nepali President Bidya Devi Bhandari to dissolve parliament, saying he or the opposition leader of Deuba had not been able to find a majority and form a new government.
On Monday, Supreme Court member Debendra Dhakal said the court had ordered that parliament be re-appointed within seven days.
“It has also ordered Sher Bahadur Deuba to be appointed Prime Minister in just two days,” Dhakal told Reuters news agency.
Deuba is expected to call for a vote of confidence within a week.
He did not respond to any requests from Oli’s office or staff.
Hundreds of Oli’s supporters gathered outside the Supreme Court to protest the court’s decision.
“We are here to challenge the unconstitutional decision of the Supreme Court, which violates the constitution and its rights,” said one of the protesters, Ramesh Acharya.
The protesters briefly argued with the violent police officers who managed to push them back. There were no injuries or arrests.
It looks like there will be a number of shows over the weekend as Oli would still be supported among the public.
Oli became prime minister in 2018 after the Communist Party of Nepal won several seats in the House of Representatives. The party, however, split twice this year, weakening Oli’s power.
