Van der Bellen is unlikely to oppose any of Nehammer’s elections. The Greens, who are part of the alliance, say their party will not change.

Nehammer said he was electing party chief Magnus Brunner as finance minister, while Schallenberg returned to his former job – foreign minister.

Since Kurz was investigated, a number of polls show that the OVP has lost 10 percent more control than its closest rivals, Social Democrats. They are now neck to neck.

Neither the OVP nor the Greens are interested in the by-elections as the polls show they have all lost seats. But the controversy between them is that a few experts expect their government to last until the end of this parliament in 2023.
