Major cities in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have been hit by power outages after a “sudden imbalance” in the power grid.

Millions of people are left without power after a major power outage in three Central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan – after a major power outage in Kazakhstan, according to government officials and residents.

The major cities of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan as well as the economic capital of Kazakhstan in Almaty were shut down during Tuesday’s strike, with journalists and officials reporting that power outages were widespread in parts of the three countries.

The grids of the three former Soviet Union countries are connected and connected – via Kazakhstan – to a Russian power grid that they can use to address individual shortages.

But the North-South power line in Kazakhstan, which connects many people in southern Kazakhstan and its two neighbors to power stations in northern Kazakhstan and Russia, was shut down Tuesday morning due to a “sudden disconnection” in the Central Asia grid section, KEGOS, an electricity supplier in Kazakhstan, said.

Restart the power supply

Officials in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan say they are restarting power after a sudden shutdown and would not be connected to the Central Asian grid.

Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Electricity said in a statement to the Telegraph that the power outage was due to an accident on a power grid in Kazakhstan.

“As a result of the high risk in power outages in the Republic of Kazakhstan, power outages occurred in the southern (southern Kazakh) states of Almaty, Shymkent, Taras, Turkestan (regions) and surrounding areas,” he said.

“The Uzbek power grid, which is connected to the Unified Power Grid, was damaged as a result of an accident that caused a sudden change in electricity and frequency at 530 lines from Kazakhstan,” it added.

A spokesman for the Kyrgyzstan Ministry of Energy told AFP by telephone that power had failed “due to an accident on the power grid”.

The Russian newspaper RIA Novosti reported that the airport in Almaty, where the power outage had not affected the entire city, continued to operate, but Tashkent had stopped receiving flights due to power outages.

The Tashkent metro, the largest in the region, has also been shut down, an AFP reporter said, adding that the tap water was not working properly.

Bishkek airport was in slow progress, a 24k local website said, citing airport officials.

‘Using Crypto Power’

Central Asian countries have seen their grids overwhelmed by the drought that affected hydropower power in Kyrgyzstan and the growth of cryptocurrency mines in the region, particularly in Kazakhstan.

The growth of cryptocurrency mining in Kazakhstan was partly linked to a de facto ban on China’s next door-to-door approach, and rising prices for volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in the second half of last year.

Southern Kazakhstan, which often suffers from power shortages and dependence on energy sources in the north of the country, was severely affected by population growth.
