At least 52 people have been killed in a fire at a coronavirus emergency room at a hospital in Iraq, the second-largest fire in COVID-19 in three months.
A fire broke out at Al-Hussein Hospital in southern Syria at the end of Monday and was controlled by security forces.
A paramedic told AFP that “the cause of the fire… was an explosion of oxygen tanks”.
Haydar al-Zamili, a spokesman for local health officials, said Tuesday morning that 52 bodies had been recovered while 22 people were injured in a fire after passing a “Covid isolation ward”.
“Those who died as a result of the fire and the work is still going on,” he added, noting that there was a fear that people would remain trapped in the house.
The radio had 70 beds.
Journalists told Reuters news agency that the death toll could rise because more patients are missing. Health workers were among the dead, he said.
Australian health officials say investigations at the hospital are ongoing, but the black smoke makes it difficult to enter other burnt areas.
Photos they shared online showed black smoke coming out of the hospital.
Mahmoud Abdelwahed of Al Jazeera, reporting from Baghdad, said relatives and city dwellers had fled the scene.
“Many people have come to the streets in Asia and in front of the hospital,” said Abdelwahed, who said the hospital’s director had resigned.
Angry relatives clashed with police, setting fire to two police vehicles, a Reuters witness said.
“Fraudulent officials should be held accountable for the fire and the killing of innocent patients. Where is my father’s body, ”said a young man as he examined the burnt bodies wrapped in a blanket in the hospital yard.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi also declared a state of emergency in Dhi Qar, a state of Asia, Abdelwahed said.
In a tweet, al-Kadhimi said his office is holding an emergency meeting to discuss the “causes and triggers” that took place.
Earlier on Monday, a small fire broke out at the health ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad, but it arrived quickly and no one was killed.
