Citing the “big difference” with the country’s President, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has resigned

Saad al-Hariri of Lebanon said on Thursday he would step down as new prime minister after meeting with President Michel Aoun.

“Obviously we will not agree with his honor as President,” Hariri told reporters after the meeting. “That’s why I apologize to the government.”

Hariri, a former Prime Minister and a prominent Sunni leader, presented the prime minister on Wednesday to President Michel Aoun, a Maronite Christian.

Under the auspices of the ruling party, the President of Lebanon is expected to be a Maronite Christian and a Sunni Muslim prime minister. Less than a year before the parliamentary election, only a few will be ready to move forward.

Lebanon has been without a government since the last one resigned following the Beirut port explosion on August 4 that killed more than 200 people, injured thousands more and destroyed parts of the city.
