Kazakhstan imprisoned former security chief for insurgency | Stories

Security forces were seen blocking the streets of the main city of Almaty in Kazakhstan after days of violence.

A former intelligence chief in Kazakhstan has been arrested on suspicion of plotting to assassinate a government official in the wake of a series of violent protests.

The National Security Committee, or KNB, said on Saturday that its former chief of staff, Karim Masimov – a close ally of Kazakhstan’s founding president Nursultan Nazarbayev – had been arrested Thursday after launching an investigation into the insurgency.

“On January 6 this year, the National Security Committee launched an investigation into the seriousness of the dispute,” it said. “On the same day, presumably convicted, former KNB chairman KK Masimov was arrested and detained for a time, along with other civilians.”

Security forces appear to have taken over the streets of the main city of Almaty in Kazakhstan on Friday after a series of violent clashes. Russian-backed President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said he had ordered his troops “shooting death”To prevent global conflicts.

A day after Moscow sent troops to help quell the protests, police marched through the streets of Almaty on Friday, although gunfire was still heard.

The protests began in response to rising oil prices but grew into a major anti-government movement by Nazarbayev, an 81-year-old longtime governor of the former Soviet Union until he handed over the reins to Tokayev in 2019.
